Tom Stieve, the Social Science Data Librarian at Brown ( Thomas_Stieve@brown.edu), is developing several short courses relevant to data acquisition and analysis. These include a two-step introduction to GIS. The software, ArcGIS, is available in all labs, so you can learn to use it and carry out applications independently. However it is preferable to attend the workshop in person.

Brown University affiliates have access to a wide variety of classes about GIS applications free of charge from ESRI, the makers of ArcGIS software. In order to access free on-line tutorials and seminars you will need to contact Lynn Carlson, manager of the EARTH Lab in Geological Sciences, and she will obtain a subscription for you . You will then receive an email directly from ESRI that will explain how to access the on-line lessons. To find out about various training options, you can also visit the ESRI virtual campus website directly by clicking here (though you will not have access to tutorials free of charge until you obtain your subscription). Contact Ms. Carlson by email at Lynn_Carlson@Brown.EDU or by phone at (401) 863-9917.
