Overview

S4 offers a variety of training activities through our website. On the pages linked above you will find information about courses, workshops, tutorials, and our GIS Institute. A short description of each is offered below.

GIS Institute
At Spatial Structures in the Social Sciences (S4) we have established a unique training opportunity for the Brown research community. The first Institute was held in June 2006 with a second completed in January 2007. Each graduate participant who completes the GIS Institute automatically becomes an S4 Fellow and continues their association with S4 in both a formal and informal manner. More information on the Fellows program can be found by following the S4 Graduates Fellows Program link from the Institute webpage. S4 will continue to host the GIS institute at Brown University; look for announcements regarding future Institutes through Brown Morning Mail, at GIS.brown.edu, and the S4 website.

S4 Courses/Workshops
S4 faculty offer several undergraduate and graduate courses in GIS, spatial analysis, and spatial thinking. Different courses are offered each semester and are announced as part of Brown’s normal registration process.

S4 Tutorials
S4 Tutorials will take you a series of self-pace tutorials on individual topics in GIS. Everything but the appropriate software is included (instructions, map files, and data), all you need to do is have access to ArcGIS, GeoDa, and an Internet browser (depending on what tutorial you choose).

Other Brown Training
Brown has several departments and units offers courses and training in GIS and spatial analysis. These include Earthlab, the library, and Public Policy among others.

Other Training
the Internet is replete with GIS information and training opportunities, in this section we have tried to identify useful and reliable opportunities.
